Lymphoedema Management

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is swelling that develops (usually in the arm or leg although it can occur anywhere in the body), as a result of an impaired lymphatic system. This may be as a result of the lymphatic system not developing properly (primary Lymphoedema), following injury or infection, or as a result of treatment for cancer (secondary Lymphoedema). The swelling is caused by the accumulation of fluid in the tissues which the body is not able to drain away properly.

Unfortunately the causes of Lymphoedema are not normally reversible but the swelling that occurs can be controlled by a combination of skin care, external compression using bandages or elastic garments, exercise and a specialised massage technique.  Benefits of effective treatment may be e.g. increased mobility, return to activities, more independence, feeling better about oneself etc.

A specialist nurse trained in the assessment and management of Lymphoedema runs clinics at the Hospice and elsewhere and can be contacted through the Hospice.

Referrals are usually made by your doctor, district nurse or other health professional but if you would like to discuss your situation please contact the Hospice.
