Support for Carers

We recognise that caring for someone with a potentially life-limiting illness places physical and emotional demands on the family and friends who provide that care.

The Norfolk Hospice therefore provides support for carers in a variety of ways.

We carry a range of booklets and leaflets on specific illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease, advanced heart or respiratory disease and on aspects of illness such as diet and nutrition, talking to children and different treatments. We can also help you to obtain current and reliable information from the Internet.

We have information on local and national support services for carers, such as ‘Caring Counts’ – a book produced specifically for carers by Help the Hospices, and ‘Who Cares’, a locally produced booklet that covers benefits and all aspects of practical and emotional care.

Our Family Support Social Worker is available to give advice and support and time and space for you to talk, as is the clinical team of nurses and therapists. We can arrange for you to speak to one of the team in confidence either in the Hospice or in the privacy of your own home.

It can be very helpful to meet and talk with other carers and we have a regular Carers’ Support Group at the Hospice. There is always time to talk either with other carers or to a member of staff; there may be a speaker on a particular topic as varied as benefits, working with technical aids or adjusting to loss and change, and there may also be an opportunity for carers to learn about and experience the benefits of complementary therapies.

If you would like further information on how we might help you or someone close to you please telephone the Nursing Team on 01485 542530 alternatively, you may email the Nursing Team.
