COVID-19: how we are meeting the challenges

I hope you are well. As a supporter of The Norfolk Hospice Tapping House, I want to thank you for helping us maintain all of the services that we are now able to provide at the hospice.

I am contacting you at this time of unprecedented demand on all of the nation’s health providers to reassure you that we at the hospice are doing everything within our power to continue to offer patients with life-shortening illnesses the specialist palliative care they need.  The wide range of conditions our patients are suffering from cannot be put on hold whilst COVID-19 threatens to overwhelm our health services.

In recent days, my team and I have been working flat out with our partners in the NHS to pool resources and co-ordinate services so that patients with an end of life diagnosis can still be supported at home or where more appropriate, in our specialist bedded unit in the Dr Hugh Ford Inpatient Unit at our hospice in Hillington. To meet the demand we have increased the beds in our inpatient unit from 8 to 13. The cost of each bed will be an additional £420 per day.

The hospice relies on voluntary donations and income from our Lottery and charity shops to fund the care we deliver. The enforced closure of our charity shops and events is already having a devastating effect on this income.

Our staff have responded to the Covid-19 emergency with truly remarkable resilience and a willingness to do whatever they can to enable us to keep caring. We recognise that this crisis affects everyone and that many of our supporters will be facing enormous challenges in their own lives and many calls on their resources but I hope that you might take a moment to think about whether there is anything you can do to help during this particular period of difficulty. It is vital that we are able to keep our service provision going to meet the growing needs of our community.

You will find several imaginative ways to help on our website, as well as information on how to join the Lottery, sign up to make a regular donation or just send us what you can to support our Appeal for the additional beds.

Why not order our special The Norfolk Hospice Monopoly board to keep the family occupied, or spend this enforced period at home to sort through some cupboards and make a collection of items to support our charity shops once they re-open? We will be enormously grateful for each and every donation.

On behalf of all of us at The Norfolk Hospice Tapping House, thank you and I hope you and your family and friends stay safe and well.

With best wishes,

Lyndsay Carter
