At The Norfolk Hospice Tapping House we have a vision that every person living with or affected by a life limiting condition will be offered choice and access to outstanding end of life and bereavement care. It is our mission to provide the excellent professionals needed to get this right for patients and their families. This last eighteen months during the pandemic have been extremely difficult for families to access the right support and many have wished to stay at home for care but were unable to access everything they needed.

Last year we piloted a new Rapid Response service to extend our daytime Hospice at Home service to run throughout the night. The pilot allowed us to provide this care from 10pm through to 6am. This has been so successful that we are now determined to extend the service so that we can support families over a twenty-four hour period.

End of life care is unpredictable, sometimes patients unexpectedly need extra care or support. This can be especially difficult if it happens at night or at the weekend, when usual healthcare professionals might not be available. Sometimes families feel alone and need to know there is someone at the end of the phone or able to visit to provide symptom management or emotional support.

We are so privileged to be accepted into families’ homes to care for their loved ones during the most difficult of times. We want to continue to extend our services so that patients truly do receive the excellent end of life care they deserve.

Whichever way you choose to support us, whether that’s through donating or through pledging to leave a gift in your Will, just know that your kindness will secure care for future generations that will need our services.

This is how our Rapid Response service has helped a family this year

“The whole team at The Norfolk Hospice were invaluable during the final stages of my mother-in-law’s life. From the moment she was given the devastating news that her illness was terminal and she would now receive palliative care, the Hospice offered a range of services for her to access and were always on hand to offer support and advice.

“During her final stages, the Rapid Response team were available for us during the night. This service really was vital. When you are with a loved one as they fight against the illness that will eventually take them, it is comforting to know that support and care is available at the end of the telephone during those hours of darkness.

“The Hospice’s Rapid Response team supported us as a family whilst providing vital care. The team showed compassion and respect and it was clear to see that they really do love what they do. They were at the end of the telephone whenever I needed them and they would remind me that I can call at any time if I was worried.

“Caring for a loved one undergoing palliative care is one of the hardest things to have to experience, but this was made easier by the Rapid Response team. There are no real words that can show enough gratitude to the Hospice for all the support they gave us as a family. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
